O Núcleo de Orientação e Apoio Pedagógico (NOAP/RAE) promove quatro encontros com a professora do Departamento de Letras Meg Amoroso Mesquita. Os Encontros de Leitura e Escrita são independentes entre si e ocorrem nos dias 24 e 31 de agosto; e 14 e 21 de setembro, das 17 às 19h. As aulas podem ajudar alunos que precisam desenvolver habilidades de compreensão de textos acadêmicos e estudantes que terão que participar do teste de nivelamento de português. Historical Indigenous Extinctions and Modern Deforestation in the Amazon |

Abstract: We study the long-run determinants of Amazon deforestation by linking historical Indigenous extinctions to modern land use. Using the 1944 Ethnohistorical Map of Curt Nimuendajú and satellite-based deforestation data, we show that areas near pre-1944 extinctions experienced 26% more forest loss by 2010. The correlation is robust to extensive controls and alternative specifications. The association is stronger for extinctions attributed to violence or disease, which created demographic voids, but is absent for those attributed to assimilation. Our results are consistent with the hypothesis that historical Indigenous extinctions facilitated modern deforestation by reducing the deterrence of traditional populations against frontier occupation.

Abstract: We study the welfare cost of inflation in a multi-sector menu cost production networks model with heterogeneity in nominal rigidities across different sectors. Inflation is costly in the model due to aggregate misallocationthe Domar-weighted within-sector price dispersionand menu costs paid by firms to adjust prices. We calibrate this model to 65 U.S. sectors by matching several moments of the price change distribution within these sectors and the input shares from the input-output table. At 2% inflation, we find that the welfare cost of inflation is 3 times higher
compared to a benchmark one-sector economy. Moreover, going from 2% to 4% inflation, the consumption-equivalent welfare cost of inflation increases by 21 basis points, as opposed to only 6.5 basis points in the one-sector model.

Abstract: This project develops a dynamic econometric model to analyze how researchers allocate their efforts between independent and collaborative R&D, considering the interplay of cooperative benefits and competitive incentives. The model incorporates strategic interactions in academic networks, where collaboration enhances joint productivity but also redistributes recognition based on individual prestige and future competitiveness. By introducing a dynamic motive for competition, the model captures how current collaborative choices influence future bargaining power and productivity. Empirically, the study uses detailed data from NSF research awards and citation records to estimate collaboration networks and innovation outcomes.
