Message from Pope Leo XIV
Congress of Iberoamerican Universities
Ten years after Laudato Si’ and on the road to COP 30 in Belém, the University Network for the Care of the Common Home (RUC), supported by the Pontifical Commission for Latin America (PCAL), will host the Second Synodal Meeting of University Rectors. As a follow-up to Organizing Hope,[1] the first gathering held with Pope Francis at the Vatican in 2023, this global academic event will unite over 200 universities from across Latin America, the Caribbean, Spain, Portugal, and the U.S, in alignment with Pope Francis’s legacy. Alongside them, government officials, international agencies, business leaders, and civil society advocates will come together to advance a shared goal: the care of our common home.
In 2013, from Rio de Janeiro, Francis called on young people to "make a mess." Now, the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC), as a member of the RUC and with the support of the Association of Jesuit Universities (AUSJAL), offers to host this Ibero-American event. It will have the active participation and promotion of the Brazilian government represented by Marina Silva, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, and by the president of COP30, Ambassador André Corrêa do Lago (to be confirmed).
Program
The congress will be structured according to the inspiration of the synodal method, promoting active participation, mutual listening, and collective discernment over four days, each one inspired by the “four dreams” of Pope Francis in the Apostolic Exhortation Querida Amazonia.
Event Location
The event will take place at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio), located at Rua Marquês de São Vicente, 225, Gávea, Rio de Janeiro – RJ.
There are two entrances to the university:
- Main entrance: through the PUC-Rio Bus Terminal, located at Rua Padre Leonel Franca, near number 250 – Gávea.
- Secondary entrance: via Rua Marquês de São Vicente, 225 – Gávea.
