Most mornings when Angelo Chol wakes, he has no food to eat.
His first-and sometimes his only-meal of the day comes at noon. Each day, Angelo, 14, eats a bowl
of porridge. Some days he also gets a bit of bread. Each day is the same.

Forced to flee

Four years ago, Angelo and his family were forced to flee from their home in southern Sudan.
Armed tribesmen, fighting the Sudanese government in a civil war, had invaded Angelo's village. They
stole the villagers' cattle and burned most of the homes.

Angelo's father escaped, but no one knows where he is-or if he's still alive. With his mother,
brothers, and sisters, Angelo came to northern Sudan, where there is no fighting. They live in a
settlement outside of Khartoum, Sudan's capital. About 1.5 million people live in the makeshift refugee
"towns" around Khartoum.

"When we arrived," Angelo says, "the first thing we did was build a small hut from sticks. To make
walls and a roof, we covered the sticks with scraps of cardboard and plastic." Inside the hut, there is
nothing but a burlap mat spread across the ground to sleep on. Because Angelo's family is so poor, they
rarely have a morning meal. "Sometimes we have tea," says Angelo, "but most of the tea we have, my
younger sister tries to sell to anyone who passes by our shelter."

Angelo gets his noon meal-his only certain meal of the day-at the school he attends. The
porridge he eats is made of dura-a grain that has been boiled into a paste. "Sometimes, there is a little
sugar to sweeten it, and a bit of flat bread," Angelo says. "If we are very lucky, we may also have some
corn or tomatoes or onions. Vegetables are a treat."

At night, Angelo's family sometimes has a smaller meal of the same porridge. But unless his mother is
lucky and finds work cleaning houses or washing clothes, they do not have money enough for food.

Others starve

Yet Angelo considers his family fortunate. Every day, more people join the others in the settlements. They,
too, have fled the civil war. The newcomers tell sad tales of others who were too weak to flee. Wandering,
searching desperately for food, they starve to death.

Angelo is not starving here. International relief agencies supply some food for those in the settlements
who have nothing to eat. But for years, day after day, Angelo has gone hungry.

He has grown accustomed to being hungry. The gnawing stomach pains last a few days.
Eventually, they disappear, to be replaced by headaches. Angelo is always tired. And, with too little to
eat, his body cannot fight off diseases. As a result, malaria, diarrhea, and intestinal parasites are
common where he lives.

At first, Angelo thought about food all the time. Now, he does not like to think - or talk about -
food at all. Angelo says he does not know if the war in his country will ever end. And he does not know if
his family will ever have land again to plant. He says there is nothing he can do to change things. So, he
must simply accept his hunger. For Angelo Chol, hunger is a way of life.
