Department of Egyptian Antiquities

Map of Ancient Egypt

The Department of Egyptian Antiquities displays the remains of the civilisations along the banks of the Nile from the time of Nagada, around 4000 before our time, up to the Christian era, around the XIth century A.D., with a large Coptic section.

The department is to be transformed, enlarged and reorganised within the Grand Louvre Project.

It is currently closed for work up to the end of 1997. During this work, a selection of the principal works is being presented provisionally in the moats of the Medieval Louvre and on the first floor (Denon Wing) of the museum.
