Exchange students

WHO: Undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in institutions that have an exchange agreement with PUC-Rio. In addition to the Portuguese as a Second Language (required) course, these students may attend other regular courses according to her/his area of interest.

CREDITS: Academic credits are obtained.

TRANSCRIPT: The student will receive an official PUC-Rio transcript listing the courses taken with its corresponding total number of class-hours, number of credits obtained and the final course grade.

APPLICATION: In addition to the specific exchange program requirements and application process of the student´s home institution and study abroad office, the student must also observe all the requirements and deadlines of the PUC-Rio application process.

DEADLINES

• May 15th (exchange period starting in Jul-Aug)
• October 15th (exchange period starting in Feb/Mar)

TUITION / FEES: Exchange students do not pay tuition.

An administrative cost is charged. International students are allowed to attend courses at PUC-Rio up to two regular terms plus the Pre-Term Portuguese as a second language Intensive Course.

Students registered for a year or those who request extension of the student exchange period, will pay the renewal of the administrative cost charged during the deadline for the Exchange Period Extension.

VISA: A student visa is required. The visa must be obtained BEFORE the student´s entrance in Brazil. A tourist visa cannot be transferred into a student visa inside the country. When the applicant is accepted, CCCI will send a LETTER OF ACCEPTANCE that will enable him/her to obtain a visa at a Brazilian Consulate.

Independent students

APPLICATION: The procedures for Independent Student registration are the following:

a) Required documents: Online application forms filled out, upload the required documents. Personal Statement (introduce yourself and why you would like to study at PUC-Rio), 02 recommendation letters (originals and signed), Official Transcript, Copy of health insurance with company name and policy number covering COVID 19,  (recommended) a copy of passport (main page), 01 photo (3 cm x 4cm), Covid 19 Certificate of vaccination, Yellow fever immunization (recommended), the administrative cost payment.

b) Upon acceptance of the applicant, CCCI will send him/her a LETTER OF ACCEPTANCE that will enable him/her to obtain a student visa at a Brazilian Consulate.

c) TO REGISTER: The student must present him/herself at The International Office - CCCI one week before the first day of classes to confirm registration with a copy of the letter of acceptance sent by CCCI and the passport with a STUDENT VISA valid for the entire academic period. Students will not be registered without the appropriate visa.

TUITION/FEES: An administrative cost is charged. Independent Students pay tuition.

The academic tuition will be charged according to the number of credits taken in each term. In Brazil, the yearly tuition is divided into 12 monthly payments. The semester (term) tuition is divided into 6 monthly installments for regular students. Thus, in our first term of the year (late February/early March to late June/early July), students make 6 payments: in January, February, March, April, May and June; The same happens in the second term, with payments in July, August, September, October, November and December.

For the international students it is divided differently, based on the date of arrival.

Because international exchange and Independent students arrive at the university only in the second month of the semester, the semester tuition will be divided into 4 installments (March, April, May, June), THE FIRST TWO INSTALLMENTS EQUAL the sum of 2 monthly tuition payments each. In case of a late registration, the total tuition amount will be divided into 3 monthly payments (April, May, June).

Method of Payment:
The fees must be paid in Reais (R$), according to the dollar rate of the day.

Independent Students will receive by e-mail the bill and the payment must be done before the 3^rd day of the month, in order to avoid an extra fine.

REMEMBER THAT, ACCORDING TO THE NEW DELIBERATION FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS, YOU ARE ALLOWED TO ATTEND A MAXIMUM OF 5 COURSES, CORRESPONDING TO A MAXIMUM OF 24 CREDITS, AND A MINIMUM OF 2 COURSES OR 08 CREDITS PER SEMESTER AT PUC-RIO. (Remember that the exchange rate fluctuates in Brazil).

An administrative cost is charged. International students are allowed to attend courses at PUC-Rio up to two regular terms plus the Pre-Term Portuguese as a second language Intensive Course.

Independent Students are entitled to attend courses at PUC-Rio for up to two regular terms plus the Intensive Pre-Term Portuguese Course.

Independent Student - Portuguese as Second Language Regular Semester/Year

WHO: Undergraduate and graduate students, professionals or any adult (minimum age: 18) with a full secondary school degree. In addition to Portuguese as a Second Language course (required), the student may attend other regular courses according to his/her area of interest.

The Portuguese as a Second Language regular semester  course is designed to develop the students’ ability to understand and use both spoken and written Portuguese, in order to develop communication skills.

CREDITS: Academic credits are only obtained upon completion of regular semester courses.

TRANSCRIPT: The student will receive an official PUC-Rio transcript listing the courses taken with its corresponding total number of class hours, the number of credits obtained and the final course grade.

APPLICATION: The procedures for Independent Student registration are the following:

International non-degree-seeking students are part of the Center of Theology and Human Sciences (CTCH) due to their attendance of the mandatory Portuguese classes.

Double Degree Students

WHO: Double Degree is a program between PUC-Rio and:

• America

• Europe

The double degree program is a special cooperative program between PUC-Rio and other institutions (see the list of institution on the website). The students who have concluded the first two years at his/her home institution can spend two years studying at PUC-Rio and obtain the two degrees: one from PUC-Rio and one from his/her home institution.

The international students who participate in this program are considered to be a part of the exchange program and are subject to the same rules. Furthermore, as they will obtain a diploma from PUC-Rio, they must provide the documents  listed below and that they pursue a certain number of obligatory courses, in particular, disciplines of religious culture (see the statement below).

1. Documents. In order for the university to be able to register the students and, ultimately, give them a diploma, they must provide the following documents, translated into Portuguese by an official translator. The student should verify whether it is in their best interest to do the translation in his/her country or in Brazil.

1. Copy of official birth certificate
2. Certified copy of Bachelor's degree
3. Record of preparatory grades
4. Record of grades from the first two years at his/her home university
5. Record of grades from the Bachelor's degree
6. and from the last three years of the High School (Not necessary for French institutions)

2. PUC is a Catholic university. All of the students, independent of their religion, must obtain a certain number of credits in qualified subjects such as religious formation. It is impossible to receive a diploma from PUC without satisfying this condition. It is important that the international students are aware of this rule.

Double Diplôme

QUI: Le double diplôme est un programme spécial de coopération entre la PUC-Rio et:

• America

• Europe

Les étudiants qui ont conclu les deux premières années de cours à l´institution d’attache peuvent venir à PUC-Rio, y passer deux ans et obtenir les deux diplômes d'ingénieur : celui de PUC-Rio et celui de l´institution d’attache

Les étudiants français qui participent à ce programme sont considerés comme appartenant au programme d'échange et sont soumis aux mêmes régles. En plus, comme ils obtiendront un diplôme de PUC-Rio, il faut qu'ils fournissent les documents ci-dessous et qu'ils suivent un certain nombre de cours obligatoires, en particulier,des disciplines de culture religieuse (voir remarque ci-dessous).

1. Documents. Pour que l’institution puisse faire l'inscription des elèves et, à terme, leur donner un diplome d'ingénieur, il faut qu'ils apportent les documents suivants, traduits en portugais:par un traducteur officiel. L'élève doit vérifier s'il est plus interessant de faire la traduction en France ou au Brésil.

2. Copie certifiée du diplôme de baccalaureat
3. Relevé des notes des classes preparatoires
4. Relevé des notes des deux ans de centrale
5. relevés de notes du baccalaureat et  des 3 dernières années d´études (Cedocument n’est pas nécessaire pour les institutions françaises)

2. PUC est une université catholique. Tous les étudiants, independament de leur religion, sont tenus d'obtenir un certain nombre d'unités de valeur en matières qualifiées comme de formation religieuse. Il est impossible de recevoir un diplôme de PUC sans satisfaire à cette condition. Il est important que les étudiants français soient au courant de cette règle.

IT IS IMPORTANT TO STRESS THAT THE STUDENT VISA MUST BE OBTAINED BEFORE THE ENTRANCE IN BRAZIL. A TOURIST VISA CAN NOT BE TRANSFERRED INTO A STUDENT VISA INSIDE THE COUNTRY.

International students can study at PUC-RIO as Exchange Students, as Independent Students or as Extension Students. However, please be aware that after your arrival in Brazil you are not able to change your student status. For instance, if you are registered as an Independent Student you cannot change your status to Extension Student or Exchange Student. Remember that if you only come to participate in the Intensive Portuguese Course, a student visa is not required. However, if you intend to study during the entire semester, the tourist visa is not accepted, and a student visa is therefore required. Please read the Registration Procedures carefully.

IMPORTANT:
Please be aware that all payments (tuition, orientation fee, administrative cost, etc.) must be made in cash (Reais). Traveler's checks, credit cards, checks are not accepted.

Internship or Research students

The Brazilian law requires that students seeking for internships need to officially be enrolled in a Brazilian university.  They need to enroll as an intern-status student at the International Office – CCCI website and agree to our terms of applications, as well as sending the required documentation (copy of passport, letter of recommendation and appointment to the internship etc…)

In order to help the students in their registration in a Brazilian institution the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro – PUC-Rio, accepts the internship/research students nominated following the requirements below.

The student may obtain a student internship in two ways:

1. Academic Internship within PUC;
2. Academic Internship outside of PUC with supervision from professors of PUC-Rio.

• Documents:

The international students must complete the online form and submit all documentation required as follow:    

1. Online form: http://www.puc-rio.br/ensinopesq/ccci/incoming/forms-hp_students.html - students must fill out the online forms with the “Status Estagio”.  And send the documents to CCCI Office.
   Interns will be registered as an internship/research student in our system.
2. Documents: copy of passport, resume, photo, letter from the home university stating that the student is authorized to participate in an internship.
3. Official Transcript, Copy of health insurance with company name and policy number covering COVID 19, a copy of passport (main page), 01 photo (3 cm x 4cm), Covid 19 Certificate of vaccination (recommended), the administrative cost payment.
4. The International Office – (CCCI) will issue a letter of acceptance to the applicant provided by the professor.
