The university

Recognized worldwide as one of the most important doctoral research centers in the country, the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio) is a private non-profit Catholic University, that was founded in 1940 with the objective of developing knowledge based on humanistic values and Christian ethics, aiming above all the benefit of society.

PUC-Rio was voted as best private university in the country, according to the General Index of Courses (IGC) 2011, the main indicator of the quality of the Ministry of Education (MEC), released in December 2012, PUC-Rio was also voted Best Private University in the country and occupied the 13th place overall at University Ranking from the Folha de São Paulo index, released in September 2012.

According to the 2013 Student Guide (Abril Publishing, September 2012), the University is first among the private universities in three areas: Social Sciences, Mathematical Sciences and Computer Science and Engineering and Production. According to the British Quacquarelli Symonds ranking, released in June 2012, PUC -Rio is the best private institution of national higher education.

In 2015, PUC-Rio was consecrated as the best private higher education institution in Brazil, as evaluated by the Student's Guide, published by Editora Abril.  

Recently, PUC-Rio got the third position in Brazil according to “The Higher Education/BRICS and Emerging Economies Ranking 2016” and the fourth position in Academic Reputation indicator from QS World University Rankings, accomplished in 2015/2016. See more on the 'Rankings' page.

About the Campus

PUC-Rio brings together about twenty thousand students in 24 departments, 33 graduate and 51 post graduate programs (Lato and strict Sensu), as well as research and extension activities. The campus was built in 104 thousand square meters, which enables integration between courses and enables the development of multidisciplinary projects.

PUC-Rio seeks excellence in research, teaching and extension to give the best training and quality that will result in competent and effective professionals.

The Gávea campus, where most undergraduate courses and most graduate work take place has a built area of ​​approximately 82 thousand square meters and is located in the Tijuca Forest area in the Southern part of Rio de Janeiro.

Examples of what the campus offers

Through some of its specialized centers, PUC-Rio also provides social assistance to its staff and the outside community. The Group of Studies and Action on Minors (NEAM) - Involved with research themes related to children and adolescents, it has been promoting transforming pedagogical actions and educational work for more than 20 years in low-income communities, the Training Office for Law Students (EMA), the Applied Psychology Service (SPA) and the First Aid Center also serve an important function on campus.

The Department of Social Work runs a considerable number of community projects in which PUC-Rio international students are invited to participate.

Close to the campus, students also have easy access to a great number of shops, banks, specialized bookstores, restaurants, a movie and a shopping mall. The beautiful Botanical Garden and Leblon beach are also only within walking distance from campus.


Social life at PUC-Rio

In the PILOTIS, the ground floor of the Kennedy Building, many cultural events take place throughout the year, including political debates and fairs.

The "Festa Junina" is a traditional folkloric festival occurring each June, it showcases typical food and traditional dances which bring to life an old-fashioned way of living in Brazil.

Social gatherings, tours and field trips are organized specifically for international students in order to help them integrate into the university community. Exchange students can also participate in other activities including the choir and other Brazilian cultural festivals.
