The International Cooperation Central Coordination Office of the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro – PUC-Rio is proud to announce the fifth edition of the Brazilian Seminars.

In order to pursue a specific academic demand, class-hours requisites, for instance, it is possible to combine the Brazilian Seminars with a customized/faculty led program.

General Information

The Brazilian Seminars developed by PUC-Rio is an international summer school which provides students, young scholars and international administrators with the opportunity to deepen their knowledge about Brazil.

It’s an interdisciplinary program meant to give a broad perspective of Brazilian issues which are currently in the global scenario.

A 50h program of lectures and off-class activities that offers a panorama on Brazil’s different aspects, ranging from culture to environmental issues, from politics to entrepreneurship.


Primarily undergraduate and graduate students, or professionals interested in learning more about Brazil.

Course Content

42h of lectures on the following themes:

Lectures and activities will be conducted in English (proficiency in the language must be Intermediate or higher)

Participants of the Brazilian Seminars may take advantage of our Brazilian homestay program. Availability is limited and is on a first come, first served basis. But, we will certainly try to select a very nice place according to your profile.

General terms and conditions

ECTS/University Credits

After the successful participation of the program, participants will receive a certificate of attendance with the total number of hours dedicated to the academic activities, technical visits, and grade.

Nonetheless, it is up to the participant`s home institution to conduct the credits approval process and decide if/how the credits will be awarded.

Withdrawals and non-attendance / refund policy

In order to withdraw from the programme your request should be made in writing.

You will receive a written formal acknowledgement of your withdrawal.

A refund for tuition fees which you have paid will be issued within thirty (30) calendar days of such acknowledgement.

All refunds are made considering the amount received in Brazilian Reais. Participants will not be refunded by any shortfalls due to exchange rate fluctuations, or be compensated for any bank or other charges incurred.

Bank charges may apply.

We operate the following policy for refunds:

Date of Withdrawal Tuition Fee Refund
At least 30 calendar days before Commencement Date 90% (*)
14-29 calendar days before Commencement Date 75%
01-14 calendar days before Commencement Date 50%
After Commencement Date No refund

(*) includes refund of homestay application fee. No refund of homestay application fee will be done after this period.

No refund will be given for withdrawal after the course start date unless an official exception is granted based on compassionate grounds, such as a death in the family, or a medical emergency. In such cases a written request for refund, accompanied by appropriate documentation from a third party must be submitted.

The Commencement Date refers to the date on which we begin to run events or teaching – for the Portuguese Survival course or the Brazilian Seminars, according to the applicants` program option.

Health Insurance

All participants are required to have adequate medical coverage during their time in Rio de Janeiro.

No part of the program tuition goes towards payment of such insurances and the University has no obligation to provide such services.


The Brazilian Seminars program is offered at PUC-Rio by the Central Coordination for International Cooperation. Every care has been taken to ensure accuracy of our program. While every endeavor will be made to provide the academic and cultural activities and services described, PUC-Rio reserves the right to make changes whenever appropriate for reasons of operational efficiency or due to circumstances beyond its control.

PUC-Rio shall not be liable for any failure or delay in the performance, in whole or part, of any of our obligations arising from or attributable to acts, events, omissions or accidents beyond our reasonable control, including - but not limited to - strikes, lock-outs or other social disputes (whether involving our workforce or the workforce of any other party), act of God, war, riot, civil commotion, malicious damage, compliance with any law or governmental order, rule, regulation or direction, accident, breakdown of plant or machinery, fire, flood, storm, pandemics, epidemics or other outbreaks of disease or infection, failure in the public supply of electricity or telecommunications equipment.
