General Information

Brazil is one of the 10 largest economies in the world. With more than 200 million inhabitants, it has a domestic market that is steadily growing. It is a country with continental size territory, abundant natural resources and scenic landscapes. Although Brazil has a rich and diverse culture, a fascinating History it also struggles with urgent social challenges.

The Brazilian Seminars developed by PUC-Rio is an international summer school. It’s an interdisciplinary program meant to give a broad perspective of Brazilian issues which are currently in the global scenario.

It is aimed at students, scholars, professionals and everyone else who is interested in the opportunity to deepen their knowledge about Brazil.

Program Structure

Program's structure: 52 class-hours offered through 18 lectures on different topics + 8h dedicated to technical visits + cultural and social activities.

The technical visits are offered to promote the encounter of the academic theory with the real life of companies and entrepreneurs located in Rio. Participants have the chance to interact with people in management positions providing significant insights about doing business in Brazil.

Cultural and social activities will complement the Brazilian experience.

It is possible to combine the Brazilian Seminars program with 20h or 40h of Portuguese language.

Portuguese Language Program

As an optional component of the Brazilian Seminars, participants may join a 20h Portuguese intensive course held before the main program and also join an additional 20h course of Portuguese language instruction offered immediately after the seminars. Each Portuguese module will offer a supplementary lecture about a Brazilian related topic, cultural and social activities. A day trip and a closing ceremony are also included in the Portuguese language Part II.

Public

Primarily undergraduate and graduate students, or professionals interested in learning more about Brazil.

Brazilian Seminars` Course Content

52h of online academic activities - lectures on the following themes:

  • Brazilian arts, culture & music
  • Brazilian history: from Brasilia's foundation to the current years
  • Doing business in Brazil, entrepreneurship & start-ups
  • Education: policies and challenges
  • Favelas in Rio
  • Environmental issues and renewable energy
  • Media and democracy in Brazil and Latin America
  • Social inclusion and social movements
  • Race relations, migration flows and the formation of the Brazilian people
  • Trending topics in Brazilian politics, BRICS and international relations
  • The Brazilian agenda of economic development
  • Urban planning, mobility and integration

NOTE:

- The academic activities are composed of 18 lectures and a course essay.

- Lectures have a duration of 2 or 3 class-hours.

- 1 class-hour in Brazil corresponds to a session of 50 minutes.



Lectures will be conducted in English (proficiency in the language must be Intermediate or higher)

  • Course essay: Participants are required to hand in an essay about a theme observed during the program.

Program fee (*)

  • Program tuition: R$ 8750,00 (Brazilian Reais)
  • Program tuition for participants of partner institutions or EARLY BIRD: R$ 8000,00 (Brazilian Reais)
    * exchange rate subjected to fluctuation

Accommodation

Participants of the Brazilian Seminars may take advantage of our Brazilian homestay program. Availability is limited and is on a first come, first served basis.

General terms and conditions

ECTS/University Credits

After the successful participation of the program, participants will receive a certificate of attendance with the total number of hours dedicated to the academic activities, technical visits (if applicable), and grade.

Nonetheless, it is up to the participant`s home institution to conduct the credits approval process and decide if/how the credits will be awarded.

Withdrawals and non-attendance / refund policy

In order to withdraw from the program your request should be made in writing.

You will receive a written formal acknowledgement of your withdrawal.

A refund for tuition fees which you have paid will be issued within thirty (30) calendar days of such acknowledgement.

All refunds are made considering the amount received in Brazilian Reais. Participants will not be refunded by any shortfalls due to exchange rate fluctuations, or be compensated for any bank or other charges incurred.

Bank charges may apply.

We operate the following policy for refunds:

At least 30 calendar days before Commencement Date 90%(*)
16-29 calendar days before Commencement Date 75%
01-15 calendar days before Commencement Date 50%
After Commencement Date No refund
(*) includes refund of homestay application fee (if applicable). No refund of homestay application fee will be done after this period.

No refund will be given for withdrawal after the course start date. Official exception may be taken into consideration based on compassionate grounds, such as a death in the family, or a medical emergency. In such cases a written request for refund, accompanied by appropriate documentation from a third party must be submitted.

The commencement date refers to the date on which events or teaching begin – for the Portuguese Part I course or the Brazilian Seminars, according to the applicants` program option.

The Brazilian Seminars program is offered at PUC-Rio by the Central Coordination for International Cooperation. Every care has been taken to ensure accuracy of our program. While every endeavor will be made to provide the academic and cultural activities and services described, PUC-Rio reserves the right to make changes whenever appropriate for reasons of operational efficiency or due to circumstances beyond its control.
