The Distinguished Chair's main goal is to promote and disseminate the American studies, here understood as studies related to themes that involve the United States in their relationship with the Americas in general and, more specifically, with Brazil. Such studies may either privilege a combined and compared dimension or privilege particular aspects of themes the countries have in common.

The Distinguished Chair is concerned with enabling teaching and research activities, bringing together academic professionals and graduate students from both countries – Brazil and the United States – that contemplate the field of American studies as defined above.

In order to do so, the Distinguished Chair's regular activities comprise the regular exchange of professors between the two countries and the support of joint research projects, when these are developed in recognized academic institutions, aiming to facilitate to this end the obtaining of financing from the promotion agencies, whether they are North American or Brazilian.
